Showit – giving you the freedom to be unique

Apr 11

aboutanja has come a long way since it was first published. It started out simple and served its purpose. I learnt basic html along the way and was able to maintain it myself. But over time, I realised that there was only so much I could do. I increasingly felt the need to upgrade for a fresh look, more flexibility and personality. But where to find a concept and design that fits you? Well, a great starting point are websites that you like the look of!

Through social media, I found Jasmine Star, an Orange County based photographer whose beautiful work and spirit I totally and utterly admire. And it was during one of her Creative Live workshops that I heard about Showit. There is so much I could tell you about everything they do and WHY but David Jay and his team truly explain it best on their site, so be sure to explore all the different pages.

What I will tell you is that Showit is totally original and unique. And they want the same for you; the creative. The freedom to be UNIQUE.

There are three ways to get a Showit website:

Build from scratch. This may sound scary but the amazing software makes it straightforward even for beginners and you don’t need any html knowledge. You can connect with one of their rockin’ designers. Or choose the happy medium and get a Style Group. Which is what I did. The beautiful thing about style groups is that you can fully customize them. Change shapes and colours, drag and drop, add galleries, widgets and so much more.

004I fell in love with one of the crazy talented Promise Tangeman’s limited edition style groups. Her vision is simply second to none. I absolutely adored the original layout and colour scheme, however the colours weren’t “me”. Not a problem because you can easily change that with the software. Over a period of several weeks, I spent a lot of time customizing the site to fit my style and brand. I am delighted with the result and have gotten wonderful feedback from it.

Below you see screenshots of just how the homepage has evolved. When I look at the original, I almost regret changing it at all because it’s just so awesome. But I stayed true to the concept and aboutanja as you see it now is reflecting my online identity: delicious, fun & fresh.

What’s more: when you join Showit, you get so much more than just a beautiful website. You create a network and you make friendships. In the past, I’ve found it challenging to connect with other photographers; as I was reaching out to learn, there seemed to be this sense of guarding industry information and competition. With Showit, I found a community that is all about sharing. They have their own social media groups and they do daily broadcasts from the mothership <—— love that term! Those casts are fun, educational and conversational. Whilst most of the shows are run by the crew, they often have other creatives host from their homes! It could be a photographer, sharing about their workflow. Or a designer, critiquing Showit web sites by request – this helps the photographer making their site as user friendly and rockin’ as can be!  It was also through Showit, that I met my logo designers and brand specialists Hey, Sweet Pea!

And if ever you run into technical issues, their support system is simply incredible. Never have I experienced such prompt and fun customer service! And because they often present the live shows, you know their faces and get a real sense of them as human beings. Makes it so much more personal than the usual anonymous voice at the other end of the phone. I mean – just look at them – wouldn’t you trust ’em with your life?!

002By now I think it’s clear that I LOVE Showit. If you are looking for something new, fresh and fun, they are for you. And if you are a photographer – they have another empire going by the name of PASS. That’s a whole other blog in the making so be sure to check back soon!
